44 Stuyvesant Street

Did you ever think you could own the oldest single-family home in Manhattan? Me either.

Photo from the Evalyn Haynes Collection in the Village Preservation Historic Image Archive.

In 1795, Nicholas Stuyvesant (descendant of Peter Stuyvesant who was the Director-General of New Amsterdam) built 44 Stuyvesant Street for his new wife Catherine Livingston Reade. You might recognize Catherine's name (Reade Street) as well, as her family were prominent New Yorkers.

The building was built on land purchased by Peter Stuyvesant over 150 years earlier. It’s hard to believe in today’s New York that when it was built in 1795 it was a free-standing structure!

This 5,500-square-foot, Federal-style brownstone has continuously operated as a residence for over 200 years and is now on the market! Listed with Corcoran by Monica Rittersporn and asking $8,900,000. Take a look at this article from Robb Report showcasing the interior, which is in amazing condition. If you’re interested in being its new owner, reach out and I’ll get us in to take a look!
